Alex Hoerner, fine art and editorial photographer, in a casual portrait outdoors

Alex Hoerner

Alex Hoerner grew up in Los Angeles, where his father helped him build his first box camera. That impulse has shaped everything since.

After Wheaton College he spent nearly a decade in New York shooting editorial for The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian Observer, GQ, Vogue, Details, Nylon, and i-D, and making campaigns with BBH, TBWA\Chiat\Day, and GSD&M.

In 2010 he came back to LA and turned the camera toward the coastline. His seascape series is made on medium format film during June Gloom, the marine layer that settles over Santa Monica Bay and collapses sky into sea.

The landscape work goes further out: the Imperial Sand Dunes, the Salton Sea. Still medium format. Still slow.

His most recent series, Surface Tension, photographs soap bubbles on the shoreline. Each image exists for a fraction of a second before it doesn't.

He lives in Santa Monica with his wife and son.
